It’s essential for future poker starlets to learn about poker hand rankings. Those just starting out tend to be in a state of confusion over who wins the hand in certain situations.

In poker, the name of the game is to win the pot and the person with the best hand wins.  To win, you must outwit the other players and have them fold their hands by their aggressive bets or by you showing your best hand.

The poker hand is always comprised of five cards regardless the number of cards involved.  That means that even if you are playing 7 Card Stud you still would make the best five card hand from those cards.

The game is played with a standard 52 card deck, in some home games (think “Desperate Housewives” kitchen poker style) there might be a joker or two.  In the deck, there are two essentials involved which are suits and ranks.

Suits are Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs and Spades which are generally not ranked in any certain order.

Ranks are the numbered cards (2 through 10) and the face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces).
