Extreme Makeover: Poker Room Edition?

In an effort some think is meant to clean up their act and get back into everyone’s good graces, Absolute Poker and UltimateBet have merged to form the Cereus Poker Network.  With the combination of both of the online poker room’s players and gaming platforms, this will make them the third largest online poker network in the world behind PokerStars and FullTiltPoker respectively.  The new network is anticipated to be up and running August 5th, 2008.  Poker Pro and UltimateBet team member Annie Duke is heading the reorganization of the poker tournament lineup.

According to Paul Legget, the Chief Operations Officer of Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, “I am so excited to announce the launch of our new poker network CEREUS.  This is a huge landmark for our company and online poker.”  He also added, “Our goal is to offer our customers the ultimate gaming experience on the web.”

Time will tell if the promise of security enhancements and new product initiatives will erase the throng of fraud and negligence and poker cheating scandals of the past.

The much talked about cheating scandal that resulted in over several million dollars of stolen winnings stemmed from the keen eyes of some high roller players.  These players at both Absolute Poker and UltimateBet realized that a handful of fellow players had win rates that were highly unlikely statistics wise.  It was thought these scoundrel poker players were able to see other players hole cards.

The online poker rooms denied any truth to this until an investigation of hand histories which showed everyone’s hold cards for a tournament were released.  This investigation proved that the tournament winner was indeed able to see other player’s hole cards.  Absolute Poker took responsibility and admitted it was true.  On the other hand, UltimateBet remains silent in either direction.  However, suspected cheaters at UltimateBet have all had their accounts closed.
